Our translators arrived indicating that the roads they came on were going to be passable. Consequently, we loaded up and were headed to Little Children of Jesus. Our optimism quickly turned to frustration. As we tried to pull onto the main road from Santo #3, there were the barriers. We immediately turned around and returned to Hope House. Rob let LCJ know we wouldn't be coming which they completely concurred with as there were several roadblocks around their compound, plus gunfire. Fortunately, nothing bad happened and we made the best of another day at Hope House. Unfortunately, not a lot of jobs remained since we finished them yesterday. Time was spent in fellowship, reading, and enjoying each others' company. There was also a cornhole tournament which Tim and Will won. It was a beautiful day!

The plan for tomorrow is to get the airport and make our flight! Rob has plans to get us there safely and we trust him completely.

It was another awesome experience. Thank you for your continued prayers and support.
We were required to stay at Hope House for the entire day. While not what we were hoping for, and certainly were sad about the unrest here in Haiti, we are safe and we managed to accomplish a lot of meaningful work at Hope House.

We split into two teams - we had the plumbing group and the medicine baggers. It seemed we were destined to fix the plumbing problems here at Hope House in the kitchen, which was no small task, requiring five or six great minds - LOL. A project that Rob said would take 30 minutes was finished about 6 hours later.

The other team spent time bagging meds for mobile med teams. For those not familiar with mobile med teams, the VoH has a health center and a pharmacy. Part of the job of mission teams is to ensure that medicines are packed and ready for the mobile med teams. They serve about 1200 Haitians in a week in the field. Preparation is key for these teams.

We listened sporadically to what was happening around the country. There were certainly instances of rioting, however, they were fairly isolated and not near us. We are hopeful that tomorrow we'll be able to return to our planned schedule which is visiting Little Children of Jesus, an orphanage we support, and the metalworks area. It's another opportunity to put money into the economy.

Continue to pray for the people of Haiti as we near the end of our week here. Pray for the long-term interests of the Haitian people and the safety of those near the rioting.
There was much concern given the threat of protests, the gas shortage, and general safety. Thankfully, Jennifer arrived after we had just left the compound and we were able to scoop her up. She had been unable to find a tap-tap (cab) and took a moto instead. We had another "haha" moment when we arrived for VBS and discovered we had forgotten the 125 peanut butter sandwiches. This same team, two days before, forgot the arts and crafts. What we lacked in planning, we made up for with an awesome VBS. There were 65 kids and several adults that attended. The translators got everyone's attention as usual and built up excitement. We followed up with our skit and the kids re-enacted it with help from the interpreters. Then there were crafts and sports. Since we forgot the sandwiches, Bensound was sent out to get what he could find as we could not leave without giving them something. We ended up handing out crackers with the juice and then their goody bags.

We returned to the Village of Hope and had lunch. We enjoyed rice and beans today with fish sauce and pikliz (pickled, spicy veggies). Some of us stuck with the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Everybody then broke up into their teams - outside painting team, the inside painting team, and the hook hanging team. The external painting team used a vibrant, Caribbean blue which can be seen from a distance. The inside painting team finished the interior walls of the upstairs, this time with less help and less mess! The hook team was unable to finish today but the teachers in the rooms where they did finish were thrilled with the hooks and the organization they provide. We had to leave early due to rumors that protests had begun near our route home and we wanted to be safe in the compound. Fortunately, we made it back with no troubles, just a lot of traffic.

A peaceful protest has been planned for tomorrow so we will be staying in the compound. We will stay busy with bagging meds, plumbing projects, and whatever else Rob and Trish can find for us to do. We will most likely not have internet tomorrow since the government controls it. Remember, no news from us is good news. Please include the country of Haiti and its people in your prayers.

However, the day started out a little dicey. Our 8:00 departure turned out to be 8:30 which was surprisingly good considering a set of keys which was the only set, was locked in a room and needed to be retrieved. After that bit of anxiety and excitement, the van needed the battery jumped. Needless to say, the group in the van had quite a silent ride to the Village of Hope. By the time the group arrived at VOH, all was good with the world.

We lead VBS with the 3rd graders - doing our Joseph skit (this time the Oscar goes to Timothy) and then crafts. The best costume designer award goes to NILAH PUTNAM! She sewed stoles for everyone in our skit, including the slave traders; made crowns for the Pharoah and Joseph, and a prison window. All were a big hit with the kids who re-enacted the skit. The St. John's servant team is getting pretty good at this skit! LOL!

Then we had lunch with the kids. This time it was cornmeal and beans which really was a big first for us. It was still enjoyed by most! Following lunch, we did VBS with 4th grade following the same format. Then most of us who sponsor a child were able to meet with them. A few students were absent so we'll hopefully see them tomorrow.

Then we broke into teams. Scott, Sarah, and Jim were asked to lead teams and find members. There was some poaching of team members and rules had to be made but it all turned out well. Scott's team consisted of Tim, Ken, Richard, and Greer (plus Michelene, the student he used to sponsor at VOH) and they worked on the coat hook project. Sarah's team gained members and was Alli, Audrey, Lisa, Will, Tara, little Paul, plus the translators Valery, Bensond, and Evans. This team painted the front of the health center and the interior walls of the lower level. Jim's team was Cassie, Mary, Jamie, and big Paul. Jim would like you to know that Alli joined Jim's team and was much happier with them. Just sayin...

Our time at the school ended with a basketball game between Will, Tim, and Lisa against Evans (who prefers to be called Kobe Bryant), John Robert, and Bensond. It was very entertaining for everyone. There were lots of great stories today, far too many to record here. As we started, we had a terrific day sharing the joy of our Christian faith.
No internet then an intense game of Spoons got in the way!

Today we drove about 20 minutes off the main road for our first VBS. We learned we have to be very flexible in Haiti. They didn't seem to know we were coming so kids from the local school were rounded up. We had planned for 125 kids but ended up with close to 160. We danced and sang songs lead by our interpreters, Evans and Pierre. Then we did our skit to tell the story of Joseph and His Multicolored Coat. Rob won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor playing the part of a slave trader. Who knew? The kids then enjoyed re-enacting the story. They were an energetic ad well-behaved group. Some of us even got to snuggle a sweet baby whose mom was there. Unfortunately, we forgot our crafts but it was okay because we wouldn't have had enough materials or time to complete them. We then passed out the peanut butter sandwiches - a half to each instead of a whole - and a cup of Kool-Aid. No goody bags for this group, as we didn't have enough for everyone.

Following VBS, we drove back to the school where we enjoyed a delicious meal of rice and beans with a fish sauce. As usual, frisbees were used in place of plates! Then there were three tasks - bagging food for the malnutrition clinic, painting the guard house, and prepping for putting up coat hooks for the kids. There was a slight glitch with the rice... When we were almost done, we found out we were supposed to be putting half as much as we had been in each bag. We jumped into action and quickly rectified the situation. Three sweet kids whose mom was at the clinic being seen by the doctor entertained and helped us. The guard shack was painted quickly with just a little paint getting on the painters. The last project group got the wood cut and painted in preparation for completion tomorrow - all while dodging soccer balls!

After watching the kids play soccer and basketball, we've determined that Haitian kids are much tougher than American kids! One kid, playing soccer, did a baseball-like slide into a concrete wall, knocking blocks off of it, and just got up, brushed himself off and kept playing! Will enjoyed connecting with several Haitian boys through playing basketball with them. Let's just say, they don't seem to care much about fouls. They were very dramatic, however, when they fell down, much like FIFA soccer players!

We returned to Hope House, had a great dinner of Haitian chicken and rice, did devotions, and spent time socializing. An energetic game of Spoons was played to end the night. Paul S. again proved he's cut out for other pursuits.

Tomorrow we will do VBS at the school with 3rd and 4th graders and then do some painting! Remember, if you don't hear from us, it's because the internet is not working.
We attended church at Port-au-Prince Christian Fellowship followed by lunch at the Observatoire. It's up in the mountains and has a spectacular view of all of Port-au-Prince. You have to have patience, though, because it does take several hours of time, but it's worth it. Then we went to Giant grocery store to buy some of the local products like vanilla, coffee, and plantain chips to share with our family and friends back home. We like to put money into the economy.

We returned to Hope House and prepped our goody bags and made peanut butter sandwiches for our Vacation Bible School (VBS) tomorrow morning. Our goody bags have toothpaste, toothbrush, raisins, a mini Haitian flag, and bubbles. We did 360 goody bags and 135 peanut butter sandwiches. The assembly line at peak rate, completing all this in an hour and a half.

We experienced our first Super Bowl Party in Haiti with hamburgers, cheeseburgers, potato salad, chips, and for the older crowd - Prestige. During halftime, we did our devotions and practiced our skit. This year we are doing the story of Joseph and his multi-colored coat!

Tomorrow we look forward to VBS then out to the Village of Hope School where we'll prepare bags of beans and rice for distribution, paint, and do some other odd jobs.
One suitcase arrived late, which made everyone a little anxious, but it's the first time in 11 years that has happened. We made it to Hope House from the airport in record time! The temperature here was 91 degrees which is a temperature change of 118 degrees from where Richard came from (Minnesota)! It's been an interesting start so far with five team members under the age of 18. It's adding an entertainment value we haven't experienced in 11 years! Tim, for sure, is a comedian. We spent the afternoon unpacking our 28 suitcases totaling about 1400 lbs in record time and repacked them according to where they need to end up. We then enjoyed getting to know one another, telling stories, relaxing, drinking Prestige (Haitian beer), and snacking. The night ended with devotions, thanks to Greer. Our song selections were done by Alli and Tim which makes it more contemporary rather than the 17th-century classic hymns that are normally part of our repertoire. Trish and Rob are very thankful. :)

Tomorrow we will go to church, out to lunch, the grocery store, and then prepare for Monday's VBS.
The internet was back up this morning and while slow, has stayed on today. We'll start with yesterday's news...today.

We had our second VBS of the week. This was held in the town of Ganthier which is the town that the students at Village of Hope primarily come from. They are the village that the health center mainly serves. The church was on a very small plot of land and the structure was a tin building with some benches inside for the congregation. They managed to fit about 120 kids into this space. Our interpreters spent the first 20 minutes getting the kids excited by playing games and singing songs. We did our skit, The Three Wisemen, which was received well. Different this time was that the children then re-enacted the skit. They seemed to be excited to do it and showed us up! We followed up with arts and crafts, as well as sports ministry, much like Tuesday. We would like to thank Greer's wife, Nilah, for all the work she put into preparing items for the goodie bags, and costumes and props for our skit. The camel was a huge hit!

After serving them lunch and passing out goodie bags, we headed back to VoH for our own lunch after which we went back to our tasks. At the end of the day, we were 90% complete. When we returned to Hope House, we had our usual happy hour. Some of us played card games and others relaxed with a book.

Today we rose earlier than we had been in order to get to VoH for the kindergarten opening. This is always a highlight for the team! Today at opening they remembered the earthquake which was eight years ago today. They were encouraged to remember those they lost and look forward to a better future. After opening, the kindergarteners had play time with duplos, blocks, and other toys. Some of us enjoyed sitting down and interacting with them. For the first time, we did VBS at the school, this time with 3rd and 4th graders. We followed the same program - we are getting really good at this! With every performance, we get better! The kids again reenacted the skit, not once but twice, and did a fantastic job! Again, we were outshined! Adding VBS into the servant program has been a great addition to our week. It has really enriched our servant week and given us a nice balance of doing projects and interacting with the Haitians especially those who aren't part of the Village of Hope. Village of Hope no longer conducts church services on Sundays so they have incorporated it into the daily schedule of the students (a few grades attend each day). We sat in the back and as always, are amazed at their beautiful singing voices.

Following the mid-morning service, the principal, Clovis, gathered up the children that are sponsored by St. John's congregational members and members of the team. We were able to take a group picture and thankfully had the interpreters there to help us talk with the kids. After lunch, we finished our projects. The band room was complete with all painting and staining done and instruments delivered to the room. And the Village of Hope had one happy music teacher! The painting of the science lab was also completed, as well as the delivery of a few materials for that room. To top it off, all fourteen benches have been built, stained, and drilled into place. Some of us also took the annual climb up to the water tower/plant.

We returned to Hope House and experienced some fellowship, as usual. Tonight at devotionals, we closed with communion which has become a tradition for SJLC teams. We wanted to mention again that we are very thankful to Pat for the great devotions she wrote for our team. You may not have been here in person but you were in here in spirit!

As we look back on the week, we all feel privileged to have been able to travel to Haiti and to serve at the Village of Hope and in the Haitian community. We are very grateful to SJLC and others for all the support you have provided to our team and to all our fans out there who follow us on the blog! Please pray for safe travels tomorrow as we return to the states.
We will do a longer update tonight! We are off (early) to the school!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13466515807410705834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6416468784823262132.post-57300740026941520332018-01-10T21:21:00.000-05:002018-01-10T21:21:00.478-05:00Center for the Infants of Jesus (aka Little Children of Jesus)Today's mission started with a visit to Center for the Infants of Jesus (formerly known as Little Children of Jesus). This has been a highlight for St. John's servant teams for 10 years, but is also one of the more spiritually, mentally, and emotionally demanding of all the activities we do. As the first director told us ten years ago, their bodies might be broken but their spirits are not. The orphanage, run by the monks of Missionaries of the Poor, care for residents ages 5 to over 40, all with different levels of mental and physical disabilities. We spent about four hours there today which included communicating and touching those who are immobile, as well as playing balloon games and wheelchair races with those who are mobile. Stimulation is good for them and for us. Some of the team also spent time feeding those who could not feed themselves. Jim Haugan had a power struggle with a stubborn, smart five-year-old who wanted to change locations after every few bites (he lost)! The five of us who visited Haiti ten years ago are amazed at how much the physical location of the orphanage has improved their life as well as how great the level of care is that these residents receive. It's exponential - as it should be! The monks, in addition to improving the living conditions for the kids, have also set up a housing arrangement for visiting teams to come and work with the kids, as well as planting gardens, raising livestock, a water purification system, and so on. It's quite impressive! We all continue to pray for these kids and those who care for them, as well as those who donate their time, talents, and treasures.

We returned to Hope House for a leftovers lunch - very American! Then we headed to the metal works where we all joyfully put money in the Haitian economy. It's always an experience to see these artisans at work.

Following the metal works, we came back to Hope House and worked on another task that we all enjoy doing - preparing meds for mobile med teams. We packed heart medicine, penicillin, antacids, and motrin. Our dinner was a delicious Haitian stew of beef and potatoes. Now we are getting ready for devotions and then we'll make the sandwiches for tomorrow's VBS. More to come tomorrow!
This outreach to the community is serving VOH, as well as the community, well. We have been very excited about this addition to our service in Haiti. As part of this outreach, we include interpreters as part of our team. Today we had five interpreters who are young and passionate and really get the kids excited about our visit and about our faith. Our team lead off today with a skit, The Three Wiseman. Our performance may not have been Oscar material, but the feedback from our director and the local pastor was very positive! Everyone got something out of our skit! Following the skit, we separated boys and girls. The boys participated in various sports ministry programs lead by our interpreters and supported by our team members. The girls started out with the arts and crafts. They decorated crowns and colored pictures of the Wiseman at the manger. After a while, the two groups switched. An interesting difference between boys and girls, was the girls when they received the crown, were quick to want to decorate it while the boys were quick to place it on their heads. You make your own interpretation of what that means. A highlight for our team is then providing a meal of peanut butter sandwiches and kool-aid to the participants and a goodie bag at the conclusion of the program. It was an awesome morning!

Following VBS, we returned to Village of Hope and had our traditional meal - peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Pringles. Then we scattered to work on our various tasks - staining, benches, and painting. While it was much warmer today, there was low humidity and a great breeze that kept us cool enough. We are happy to report that we are 90% done with our projects. The plan is to complete them Thursday and Friday. As we headed back to the truck to leave Village of Hope, Saron was summoned by Yvette and Christine. They had found a goat tangled in its leash and it needed freeing. Saron saved the day and got the goat freed!

We returned to Hope House, tired and sore and joyfully enjoyed fellowship which included Prestige, peanuts, and reflection on the day. Oh, yeah, let's not forget showers! During devotions, which is always a time of enrichment, we were surprised to realize it's day four of our trip! Thank you for keeping up with our blog. We enjoy sharing our adventures with you!
Our main tasks today were cutting and prepping fourteen-foot benches, painting, and staining. The benches will be used for parents or relatives in the waiting area so they have a safe and secure place to wait for their children after school. The staining was done for all the cabinets that will house the musical instruments in the new band room. The painting was done in the new music room as well as what will be the science lab room which will cover chemistry, earth sciences, and biology. Needless to say, those who stained and painted today are feeling the joys of their labor. Between Prestige, Motrin, and ice, we will be back and ready for more tomorrow. Interestingly enough for those of us that have been to Haiti, this was a cool, cloudy, and windy day. It was out of character for Haiti but very conducive to the tasks of the day. The guys who were working on the benches had a lot of spectators. School started back after the break, and they were curious to see what was going on. Several Haitians helped the bench crew, which was good for the kids to see the collaboration between locals and mission team members - one team.

Following dinner, we did our nightly devotions followed by a couple dry runs of the skit for tomorrow which we are all looking forward to... lol. The story is the story of the Three Kings, but as usual, the highlight for the team is making the peanut butter sandwiches, the goodie bags (which are top-notch), and Kool-aid. These will be distributed to the children at the VBS tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support. Enjoy the pictures!
If you think we stand a lot at St. John's Lutheran, we spent the first 40 minutes standing and singing praises to the Lord. We were lead by a Haitian praise band which included seven band members. Unlike Haitian churches we've attended, this service was kept to the standards of what we're used to at St. John's. The sermon really drew an insightful lesson comparing the physical heart to the spiritual heart. One little thing goes wrong in either and complications arise. The three things that we can do to battle spiritual disease is first, see ourselves how God sees us. Two, be sensitive to the Spirit's influence. And finally, stay in touch with the Holy Spirit. As always, our church experience was spiritually uplifting and we really enjoyed the praise music.

As is the tradition for all servant teams, we went out for lunch, this time to a restaurant called La Fouchet. Its menu rivaled the Cheesecake Factory's and the tv was showing American football! This is where a lot of UN, USAid, and state department folks stay. The food and service were excellent, but true to form, it took awhile to get our food. Following lunch, we stopped at Giant Food, which is another tradition. We bought coffee, vanilla, plantain chips, and other Haitian goodies. Dave treated us to ice cream which was delicious on a hot day!

After some time to relax this afternoon, we enjoyed a delicious taco dinner. The clean-up team serenaded us with songs from the Sound of Music. The new Jim is no longer a rookie. He has volunteered to serve as the lead for the staining team and lead devotions tomorrow night.

While today was a rest and relaxation day, the next five days are packed with work! Tomorrow we will go to Village of Hope school where we will paint, stain, and build.
Despite our flight to Miami being delayed about 30 minutes, we arrived in Miami in time to make our next flight. A few of us were able to grab a quick snack. We have two rookies on our team this year. Elisabeth Auld has already proved her worth by finding the 17th suitcase, which was missing, at the Haiti airport. We're still waiting on Jim Haugan to contribute but we're a forgiving crowd. He's got six more days to do it!

Walking out the airport doors into the heat of Haiti was a shock for us. It was about an 80-degree difference from what we left in Virginia. Another shock was not having full sunshine; it was a cloudy day in Haiti! We did our usual unpacking of the suitcases and repacking of items to take to Little Children of Jesus and the Medical Clinic.

It wouldn't be a complete day in Haiti without us sitting around, enjoying some fellowship time by drinking a Prestige, eating some peanuts, and telling stories. We do this well! We even enjoyed some rain sprinkles while we enjoyed our fellowship time.

Our first meal in Haiti was very un-Haitian. We had chili with Fritos and lemon cake for dessert. It was a great meal after a day of traveling and getting sustenance from granola bars!

As usual, we ended our day with devotions provided by Pat Eichhorst who was unable to come this year. After some technical difficulties, we sang the very traditional Lutheran hymn, "The Church's One Foundation." This is a great way to start off our week together! We look forward to a terrific week of sharing this experience with one another and those we meet.
Our flight leaves at 6:45 from Reagan. Our team this year is again lead by Greer Putnam. Team members include Jim Lofgren, Sarah Finger, Yvette Moy, Jana Poppe, Richard Finger, Saron Yohannes, Jim Haugan, Scott Putnam, Christine Payne, Elisabeth Auld, Dave Siebert, and Ken Lorang! We will update you each night as long as we can get online! Please pray for our safe travel as we begin our week of serving! (Not our choice)We apologize for the hiatus that our blog was on for the last few days. We had no choice in the matter - we were without internet. We had wifi from Hope House but no Internet coming in. But while we had no internet, we had a lot of electricity so we've realized we can't have it all in Haiti.

Reflecting back to Friday, we started the morning with the kindergarten classes during their morning opening. This is always a highlight for the servant teams. They were dressed in their gym uniforms and ready to play! Following the school opening, we literally trekked out into the country for our first VBS of this trip. Those riding in the van had to walk a quarter mile to the village church and leave the van behind because there was a stream that could be passed in the truck, not the van. It would have bottomed out the van. Those of us in the truck (Pat, Sarah, Sarah, and Dave) went for a rollercoaster ride as we forded the stream that had been filled in with branches to make a path for us. Once again, VBS was a huge success. We shared the Word of God through the story of the Good Samaritan, acting it out for the children and then having them act it out. We shared crafts, as well as sports ministry with a parachute, soccer, and wiffle ball. The highlight of the VBS was to see the kids act out the same story that we acted out. The good news is that the kids were familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan. We were joined by Pierre, Benson, Wesley, Cherie, and Jennifer who acted as our translators. They are amazing! We then returned to Hope House for a significant amount of work, continuing to assemble the cabinets and painting the dining room and kitchen.

Saturday we headed to Little Children of Jesus which is always an emotional visit with highs and lows. It's never easy but always a blessing. During this visit, we were able to not only experience time with the kids but we also helped with feeding the kids, cutting their nails, cleaning, mopping, changing sheets, and picking up trash on the grounds. The culmination of our visit was a vigorous balloon volleyball game in the dining area. Some of our team members tried their hand at making balloon animals. The quality of our animals was not a key to having fun (sorry, Paul, we didn't live up to your standards). Following our visit to LCJ, we headed back to Hope House for lunch and then went to the metal works village. It's an adventurous visit with haggling with the artisans for artwork. We always manage to leave with many treasures. And yes, we returned back to Hope House to do more work on our cabinets and a second coat on the kitchen/dining room. The night ended with a rousing game of Spoons played by Sarah F., Sarah M., Chris, Greer, Pat, and Dave. Dave quickly got out of the game and after a few more rounds, Chris and Sarah F. tied as the winners. Then we moved on to Uno. We played 3 games - Dave won the first two and we didn't want to end on that note so we decided to play one more round. Two hours later, Sarah F. was the victor. We knew that we hadn't been playing with a full deck (so true on many levels) but didn't realize we were 28 cards short! We have since remedied the situation!

Sunday we were able to experience the church that Rob and Trish go to in Port-au-Prince. It's a Haitian church but the service is in English. Many of us have enjoyed the services of Haitian churches in the past but this year we were able to participate more since it was in English. As always, the singing was outstanding. It's our Joy Service on steroids. :) Following church we the privilege to ride up the mountain and have lunch at the Observatorie restaurant which provides a panoramic view of Port-au-Prince. Besides being at least 10 degrees cooler, the views at 3500 feet were magnificent. The meals were pretty good but we were definitely on Haitian time. No hurry... We were there at least three hours. We were thankful for the fellowship during lunch but we are very aware that 99% of Haitians will never enjoy what we experienced. We continue to pray for opportunity and prosperity for Haiti. On our way back to Hope House we stopped at Giant Foods - not "our" Giant like in Northern Virginia. We stocked up on coffee, vanilla, rum, and other goodies. And yes, we returned to Hope House where some worked until 10 p.m. and others worked til midnight. The goal was to have at least two cabinets completed so we could deliver them to the school on Monday.

TODAY! We went for our second VBS this morning and it happened to be one that we went to last year. The good news is that the fields we used last year for sports ministry are now fields of beans. The bad news is that sports ministry did not take place. We did manage to do the parachute game, play London Bridges, and Duck Duck Goose which for some of the team hadn't been played in 40 years. We won't name names! But again, we had the same wonderful experience this time as we did on Friday with a lot of enthusiasm, participation, and a lot of sharing. Some of us even got to hold some babies! Following VBS we returned to Village of Hope School where we enjoyed a lunch of beans and rice or rice and beans. All the men in this group were extremely happy to have six strapping young men to carry the cabinets from the truck up to the school classrooms. A huge disappointment is that no one except Sarah F. was able to meet with the students that are sponsored by members of our group. She passed him on the walk up to the school and recognized him. Thanks to Pierre, they were able to chat for a few minutes. We returned to Hope House with Richard, Dave, Greer, and Scott in the back of the truck, singing and playing instruments with our translators. The rest of us were jealous we had stayed in the van! When we got back to the compound, the rest of the doors were put on the cabinets.

As always, our team has been amazing this week. We have gelled really well and had fun together along with doing excellent work. We are all thankful for these experiences and can't wait to share our experiences with others. We are especially grateful to Rob and Trish for their leadership and guidance. They are truly amazing, humble servants.

For anyone following the blog, we encourage you to consider joining us on our servant trip in the future or joining another opportunity to serve. You will get back more than you give! "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" Acts 20:35
Kindergarten Opening on Friday

We split into teams with seven folks doing cabinets and five folks doing the painting. As usual, the teams were fluid and many of us did several different tasks throughout the day. We started the work day at 9:00 a.m. and finished at 5:30. The plan is to complete seven cabinet assemblies. We were able to accomplish building two full cabinets outfitted with shelves and have varnished both along with 3/4 of the shelves. A few people are building the outer shells of the cabinets, some are making the centers, and others did the bases on which the cabinets sit. We came up with a creative way to varnish the shelves for the cabinets by hanging them from the clothesline (the Haitians were perplexed by this and probably thinking, "what are these Americans doing?")

The painting crew completed the dining room - tearing it down, painting it a beautiful turquoise, and putting it back together. As of the end of the day, the painting crew had primed and put the first coat of a bright yellow on the dining room. We are always amazed at how much endurance and strength God gives us allowing us to get more done than we think we will. And of course, Dave photographed every moment of the day. He says he still has room for 7500 more pictures!

Following dinner, we made 125 peanut butter sandwiches for tomorrow's VBS and 250 goodie bags - 125 of which will be shared tomorrow at VBS with the remainder to be used on Monday. Toro, the dog, really enjoyed cleaning out the peanut butter jars!

Our first stop tomorrow morning will be the Village of Hope School to see the kindergarten opening. It's always a highlight of our trip. And based on last year, we have high expectations for VBS tomorrow as well. Enjoy the pictures - more to come tomorrow!
We are representing three different states - VA, NC, and MN, and six different churches.

We arrived safely in Haiti and Dave certainly made it interesting. He started at 5:00 this morning with "Where's my keys?" (he had given them to Greer but it took him 15 minutes to realize it despite several of us telling him). That was followed by "where's my passport" and was found after ripping his suitcase apart. He wasn't done. We had to check our carry-ons in DC because there was no more overhead space and the bags were checked through to Port-au-Prince. As we got ready to board in Miami, they asked for his passport and he realized it was in his checked bag. Needless to say, that resulted in the airline having to find his bag that had already been loaded into the plane, to retrieve his passport. We told them they could just keep Dave in Miami, but they got his bag immediately. We know this blog isn't supposed to be just about Dave but he gave us some great material to work with! The attached picture is his victorious boarding of the plane with passport in hand!

The logistic of the airport all went well and we only needed to bribe two people. Luckily it only cost us $10 to get our 33 suitcases through without being checked by customs - being in Haiti is an adventure. Traffic was light and we made it to Hope House in record time (40 minutes).

We spent the afternoon decompressing, unpacking suitcases, and enjoying our first Prestige! We are impressed with all the improvements that have been made to Hope House since we were here a year ago.

One of the highlights of our trips to Haiti is our devotional time. Pat wrote our devotions for this year and Dave has prepared our music. Pat gets the rookie of the year award for taking on that big task on her first trip with us!

The plan for tomorrow is working here at Hope House on building cabinets for teacher storage at Village of Hope and painting the kitchen and dining room. We are all thankful being in Haiti with the opportunity to serve others and glorify God's name.
We had another inspirational experience at the school starting with the kindergarten classes participating in the opening and raising the Haitian flag. It's very amazing to see these 3, 4, and 5 year olds line up in a straight line (mostly) and be able to sing praises to God and to welcome their American visitors to the Village of Hope. They have some amazing voices for being so young. Once again, it was a picture perfect day. As you watched the flag wave, you could look out at the mountains in the background. Following the kindergarten opening, we walked up to the chapel and participated in the opening session for the secondary school. As this is a faith-based school, the opening includes devotions, prayers, and lots of beautiful singing. For both openings, we had the opportunity to be introduced as a visiting servant team from Virginia. We received a very warm reception. It was cool to see them open up the school in song and prayer. We were also very fortunate to have our translators, Jennifer and Pierre, with us so that they could share with us what was being said.

Then we toured the secondary school which is where we painted on Saturday. VoH has about 35 acres of land but only takes up about 5 acres so there is a lot of land to work with. We were able to visit the classrooms where we were able to do all the cleaning and painting which was very noticeable and appreciated. Those of us that sponsor children were able to meet/see their children. Jim, Greer, Sarah F., Chris and Diane, and Paul took a picture with their children and were able to chat a bit, thanks to the help of the translators. We also received a tour of the health center, including the dental suite which opened this year. It was nice for the new people to see the property (Pastor, Sarah M., and Tim). The whole time we were there, the health center was filled with patients. It's easy to see the benefit this facility is bringing to this area of Haiti. Before leaving, we ate in the dining room with the children. For many of these children, it's the only meal they have. So not only are they receiving an education, they are also receiving their daily bread. Following lunch, many of the team walked up to the cistern that overlooks the school. It provides a spectacular view of the valley below and the mountains and lake in the distance. It's hard to remember that in that valley lies so much poverty.

Our next stop was Little Children of Jesus. It took us quite a while to get there as we were stuck in a traffic jam due to an accident. It took us about an hour to go about a quarter mile. Note, the traffic in Haiti, on a good day, is miserable. Our experience today was the worst we've seen in eight years. We finally arrived at LCJ where we spent a couple hours interacting with the orphans, all of whom are mentally or physically incapacitated in one way or the other. It's hard to describe how emotional it is visiting this orphanage. We keep in mind what we were told on our first visit to Haiti - while the bodies of the children might be broken, their spirits are not. The group is very thankful that these children are so well taken care of on a beautiful property with care givers who provide love and the necessities of life - food, shelter, and clothing.

We returned to Hope House late in the afternoon and spent the afternoon in fellowship, reflecting on the day and relaxing. We also had a chance to thank our interpreters for being with us. For dinner, we had a special treat - Lucien and his family joined us for dinner. His children ranging in age from three to 21 are well-known to our team, especially Greer, who provided a home for them. Our devotional time ended strongly tonight with reflections on the week, as well as Holy Communion lead by Pastor Meehan.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijqVZSFSCq716XOuRNv6TucPDL31Hv1QYwP6KA7ncw77xUaxohTpk2hs90jHBj3Svono64sBprfVU-VfHdma-WtwyOHx58FLRH3DNcBd2qbEXzk67EgEfgk6o7qhlddhSTisw4TThzotE/s640/blogger-image--2081531965.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We went to Lucien's church (Lucien is the driver for VoH). It would be safe to say we were amazed by the length of the service, the amazing singing by the congregations, and how many people, lay leaders, and musicians in a 400 square foot room. We could feel and hear the passion that this Haitian church had for God. We were welcomed and introduced during the service and at the conclusion of the service, many of the congregants shared the peace with us. We recognized some of the liturgy and the doxology, even though we did not know the language. Another interesting part of the church experience was the route we took to the church on some unbelievably narrow Haitian back roads that literally had us squeezing between houses. No GPS could have found the church using that route.

Following church we headed back to Hope House where we had a hot dog cookout with baked beans, salads, and chips. After a brief respite, we took the opportunity to see a little bit of Haiti. This year we drove up the coast and stopped in two places. The first was driving out to the bay where we got out and dipped our feet in the Caribbean Sea. Then we stopped at the Earthquake Memorial. The 6th anniversary of the earthquake was last week on the 12th of January. The memorial is about 70% complete. At this particular memorial, there are approximately 250,000 Haitians buried in a rock quarry. Many of us were glad to see that the memorial continues to be worked on and is no longer just the frame it was on past visits.

Then we returned to Hope House and started working on packaging more medicines. We packaged tens of thousands of pills and cough drops for upcoming mobile med teams to use. The team is really excited that we have set the next team up to begin serving as soon as they arrive.

Tomorrow we will be going to Village of Hope School and Little Children of Jesus - two of our favorite places. We look forward to seeing the kindergarten students' opening, seeing the children we sponsor, and then interacting with those at LCJ.

(L-R) Paul, Jim, Tim, Richard, Sarah F., Pastor Meehan, Ken, Greer, Chris, Saron, Diane

(L-R, kneeling) Sarah M., Scott

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13466515807410705834noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6416468784823262132.post-62899233635138314012016-01-16T21:00:00.001-05:002016-01-16T21:09:38.504-05:00A Project DayToday, the team was totally immersed in projects at Village of Hope School. We completely cleaned and painted three super-large classrooms - an art room, 6th grade room, and 2nd grade room. As is common with the team, we separated into teams - those who removed furniture, those who wiped down dust and grime, those who cut in, and those who did the rolling and we alternated as we went from room to room. Everyone had the chance to experience the whole project. In addition, we had another team, Paul, Scott, and Ken, put in 12 new "guts" of a toilet. They used supplies we brought with us from VA. It was a beautiful day out at the school. The sun was shining and there was a nice breeze. It was a great day to be doing a service project. From every vantage point, we could see the beauty of Haiti - the lake, the mountains, and the countryside.

While at the school, Rob gave us a tour of the new computer room. What an exciting addition to the school. Envision a clean, cool computer room in dusty, hot Haiti. They've done a good job converting one of the administration rooms. They've installed windows, an air conditioner, and electrical power to run the server and the 24 independent computer stations. The electricity is all powered from solar power. It's very exciting to see the Village of Hope moving into the 20th century. The room is not quite done. They are still in need of about $30,000 to finish the project. So if you're interested in donating, let us know.

There has been a few firsts associated with this trip. The first, as we've mentioned, was VBS. The second, was, this was the first time any of us have traveled in Haiti at night. We left the school later than expected and saw the beautiful sunset as we drove home. Not all drivers believe in, or have, lights. The dust creates a nice haze across the roads as people, animals, and motorcycles dart through traffic.

By the time we returned to Hope House, we were dusty, grimy, and colored in paint - white and Caribbean Blue. Luckily it's acrylic this time - not oil! We shared a lot of really good fellowship and had some great sing-along opportunities.

Tomorrow we will be going to Lucien's church which is always an interesting experience to attend a Haitian church. We have known Lucien for years and he is currently the driver for VoH. After that, we will have lunch at Hope House and then head up the coast to see a different part of Haiti. At some point when we return, there are about 8,000 medicines to be packaged.

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13466515807410705834noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6416468784823262132.post-63655970966581079452016-01-15T20:37:00.001-05:002016-01-15T22:04:29.717-05:00Follow on SuccessThe SJLC Servant Team followed up with what was another terrific servant experience conducting VBS. Our team traveled to a village near where we were yesterday. Saron again told the story of David and Goliath with the help of Jennifer, our translator, but unlike yesterday, the children were familiar with the story. Following the Bible story time, we split into two groups - boys and girls. The boys went outside and split into three groups, playing whiffle ball, soccer, and parachute games. The interesting part of the whiffle ball, was not only were the kids involved with doing something new, but the parents standing alongside where we were playing, also participated. They swung the bat, hit the ball, and did a lot of smiling. The baseball field also came with three goats, tied up in various parts of the field. The soccer and parachute games were once again a big success. The girls stayed in the church and colored and did a craft. They were great about sharing the crayons and helping one another which was somewhat different than yesterday. One of the biggest things that hit us was that there was a girl with Down's Syndrome who was a part of the activities. This was remarkable because she was part of the activities, whereas usually those with disabilities in Haiti are shunned or discarded as babies. Sarah's "teacher look" emerged a few times when some of the other girls were laughing at her coloring. She had some great hits on the whiffle ball field and yet, when she made contact and hit the ball, the same people who were laughing at her coloring, cheered her on. Following the different activities, we again handed out the lunches (pb sandwiches and kool-aid) and a goody bag before saying "good-bye!"

After refueling our bodies, we headed to the infamous tin shops. It was a great opportunity to put money into the Haitian economy. We purchased many different tin products for families, friends, and churches. It's always an experience to see these entrepreneurs apply their trade. Saron was again our biggest spender! While there we ran into some other Americans from Colorado and Ohio.

We got back to Hope House around 3:30 and spent some quality time reflecting with one another and having some prime fellowship time. We concluded the evening with devotions, which lead to some very insightful conversation by everyone relative to the assigned readings and what we're experiencing in Haiti. The veterans on the team, Jim, Sarah, Greer, Richard, and Paul, have concluded that this new aspect of serving in Haiti, doing VBS out in the community, is an insightful experience and is an important part of what our mission is in Haiti. It's a great balance between service projects and reaching out and connecting with Haitian families which is something we haven't done before.

<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; Vacation Bible School was a fabulous, first-time experience for the St. John's Lutheran Church Servant Team. We really had a terrific opportunity to share the story of David and Goliath (lead by Saron) with about 125 children who live at least a half hour walk off the main road. Most of the homes were simple mud shacks and tents. These children are ones who do not attend school. We were assisted by Pierre, Jennifer, and Evans who translated for us and provided terrific support. Following the Bible story, we then split into various activities which included coloring and a craft (Saron, Sarah F., and Diane), and whiffle ball (Pastor, Chris, and Jim), soccer (Paul and Tim) and parachute games (Sarah M., Richard, and Ken). Greer and Scott were floating around helping the different groups. The Sarahs, Diane, and Greer also enjoyed holding any babies that needed to be held. Sarah M. had the experience of being peed on by a baby (they don't wear diapers). The interaction with the Haitian kids was both inspirational and rewarding. The team felt a connection with many of the kids playing whiffle ball and parachute games. For many of the Haitian kids, playing these sports was a first-time experience. There was only one injury reported - Jennifer, the translator, got hit in the cheek by the bat but she got right back in there with no complaint. We spent four hours there. The feedback from the team is that having the VBS was a good edition to what has been our normal practice of just interacting at the school and doing servant projects. This new aspect of doing a VBS as part of a servant team is an effort by Lazarus Project to build a stronger, and more trusting relationship with the community, especially as it relates to using the health center.

Following the VBS, many of us went to a local supermarket - Giant - recently constructed near the US Embassy. Plus, it was more modernized than the other supermarkets we usually go to. Upon returning to Hope House, there was two hours of counting and packing medicine in preparation for mobile medical teams. It's very important for these supplies to be pre-packaged and ready to go so these medical teams can hit the ground running. Finally, we made another 150 peanut butter sandwiches to be shared with the children who will participate in the VBS tomorrow at a new location.

We concluded the evening in the same fashion, as always, with devotions which were aligned with our experiences in Haiti glorifying God's name. Thank you to Paul for being our devotional leader.

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13466515807410705834noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6416468784823262132.post-81335128088783905632016-01-13T20:48:00.001-05:002016-01-13T20:48:25.248-05:00The Adenture BeginsGreetings from Haiti! "It's been a long day but a fun day," says Richard Finger. We arrived safely in Haiti and experienced no logistical nightmares. The closest thing to a snag was Sott Putnam, who met us in Miami from North Carolina, arrived just as we were boarding the flight to Haiti. Our team was greeted by familiar faces - Lucien, Populaire, and Cherie. The rest of the group includes our fearless leader, Greer Putnam, as well as, Jim Lofgren, Paul and Tim Swicord, Pastor Jack and Sarah Meehan, Saron Yohannes, Sarah Finger, Chris and Diane Brody, and Ken Lorang.

Upon arriving at Hope House, the team was introduced to Rob and Trish Low, who have been the directors since March 2015, and their young pup, Toro. We accomplished several activities including unpacking the suitcases, organizing and storing the items we brought, making 125 peanut butter sandwiches for VBS (Vacation Bible School) tomorrow, followed by 250 goody bags for the children who will attend VBS over the next two days. Our new experience this year, for which the sandwiches and goody bags will be used, will be leading VBS for two local communities in the Gantheir region of Haiti. This is near the school and health center but the children attending VBS are ones who do not attend school. The plan includes a Bible study on David and Goliath, and also on the Resurrection, then breaking out into sessions to include arts and crafts, and sports ministries. The team is excited about being able to reach out and touch other communities in Haiti. More to come on this experience tomorrow.

We would be remiss without sending out special thanks to Nilah Putnam for serving as driver for many of us at 4:00 this morning and putting together the hymnals used for our devotionals. And to Jan Swicord for preparing our nightly devotional script. Clearly Paul and Jan were overachievers for aligning our devotions with Joining Jesus on His Mission by Greg Finke. Sarah Meehan shared her first impressions of seeing a nation that experiences this kind of poverty, especially since it's her first time out of the country. Tim has already explained to Rob, the director, who is really in charge. Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13466515807410705834noreply@blogger.com10
